Purpose The Susan Howard Community Service Award recognizes academically strong young people from low-income families in Texas or the United Kingdom who have shown initiative and leadership by creating, launching, or organizing community service efforts that benefit and inspire others. Background and overview Susan Howard served as President of BAFTX for nine years and led the organization with commitment and vision through 2017, helping it grow into a thriving organization. The Susan Howard Community Service Award was established in her memory to celebrate youth who, like her, are dedicated to serving and strengthening their communities. Award focus This prize honors young leaders who have demonstrated drive and perseverance in conceiving, starting, or directing a community service project. Applicants should show clear leadership, measurable community impact, and evidence that their work provides tangible or inspirational value to others. The award is $5,000 and will be remitted directly to the recipient’s higher-education institution or placed in escrow if required. Funds must be used for tuition expenses only. Eligibility Applicants must meet all of the following: - Be a resident of either Texas or the United Kingdom. - Be enrolled full time in an educational program within the Texas or UK education system. - Be between the ages of 11 and 21. - Currently be engaged in a community service project, or have completed one within the past 12 months. - Come from a low-income household. - Maintain a competitive academic record and excellent school attendance. - Be available to attend the Awards Dinner in Houston on April 30, 2026, to receive the award. Required application materials Applicants should submit all of the following: - Completed application form. - A reference letter. - A letter of recommendation. - Current school transcript. - Proof of financial need (for example, IRS Form 1040 — with Social Security numbers redacted — or FAFSA Student Aid Report). - An essay describing the applicant’s community service project, leadership role, and impact. Notes - The $5,000 award is restricted to tuition and will be sent to the institution or held in escrow as appropriate. - Ensure any financial documents submitted have Social Security numbers or other sensitive data obscured.
