Purpose and overview
This undergraduate scholarship supports low-income Texas students by reducing the cost of pursuing a first college degree at a public two- or four-year institution in Texas. Current Texas college students and high school seniors may apply. Awards are intended to cover tuition and other college-related charges payable to the institution; scholarship funds are disbursed directly to the college. Awards are granted for the Fall semester.
Eligibility
To be considered, applicants must meet all of the following:
- Be a Texas resident.
- Be between 17 and 25 years old as of August 1, 2026.
- Be enrolled full-time in the Texas education system (or be a high school senior accepted to begin full-time study).
- Be accepted to attend a public 2-year or 4-year college in Texas.
- Plan to major in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) or in business-related areas (including Management, Human Resources, Marketing, Finance, Accounting, etc.).
- Come from a low-income household.
- Maintain the required GPA: at least 3.0 for current college students; at least 3.5 for current high school students applying as incoming freshmen.
- Be able to attend the Awards Dinner in Houston on April 30, 2026 to receive the award.
Application materials
All applicants must complete the application form and upload the following items:
- IRS Form 1040 (black out or otherwise hide Social Security numbers).
- School transcript (official or unofficial).
- FAFSA report (or TAFSA report for non-U.S. citizens).
Additional items (only required if you have not previously received a BAFTX scholarship)
- An essay of 400–450 words answering: "Excluding financial need, what are the most significant challenges you expect to face while in college and how will you overcome these challenges?"
- A letter of recommendation from a teacher or school counselor on official school letterhead. The letter should be uploaded with your application or emailed directly by the recommender to info@baftx.org by 12:00 PM (noon) on March 31, 2026. Guidance for recommenders is available online.
Notes
- Scholarships are for the Fall term and payments are sent directly to the college to cover tuition and eligible college expenses.
- Ensure recommenders submit letters on school letterhead and meet the stated deadline.
